| Hi, I've done nothing at all to modify my '96 3CT-E. While I was playing about (!) trying to get my one going I removed the air inlet pipe form the filter to squirt in Quick Start. When I put the car back together I forgot to re-fit the pipe. When I went out the engine sounded completely different - real turbo noise, far more than usual. Today I went out with the pipe re-connected, turbo sounded as it usually does. The air filter is about a year old, and has not been subjected to any level of muck - the air here is more than clean, and there are no cities or traffic jams. So my question is - has anyone tried a free-er flowing air filter, and does it make any difference. It just seems that if the turbo sounds different there may be more air going through it. I didnlt notice any difference in performance as I was more interested in whether the car would keep going now I've repaired it. I was also wondering why modern diesels have such a level of filtering anyway. There are no small jets as there are in petrol cars, so why do they have such fine filters - in case the finest sand gets through in a sandstorm and wears the engine out??? | ||||||||

| The air filter change recommendations are based on an average useage. So if yours gets very little dust change less frequently. It is the fine dust that causes the damage - I recall reading a book by the great David Vizard who stated something along the lines that an engines life would be halved fitting a bellmouth ram pipe onto a carb without a filter due to the sandblasting effect of fine grit into the bores. ![]() Try to imagine going along the motorway breathing air at bumper level when a truck in front goes slightly onto the hard shoulder and sends up a cloud of dust and girt - mix that with 3000 rpm and an oily bore surface to stick to........ Some swear by a cleanable K&N filter. PM Blobby for the part number as he has one fitted. Clean and re-oil regularly. | ||||||||

| Hi just a thought on your buses performance minus its air filter,What about your altitude purely a guess but you must be way above sea level,So the air i would presume is thinner so your engine is getting even less air when restricted by the air filter,So i would think a good aftermarket performance filter will improve your power without increasing fuel consumption,Nick. | ||||||||
