Default My (not so) New Previa - a bunch of problems

Hi Guys, been a long time since I posted here - so long in fact my account has been purged and I had to re-register!

Until a year or so ago we had a '92 Estima, that finally gave up the ghost. After a brief fling with a dreadful Vauxhall Zafira and the arrival of Baby number 4 we decided it was high time we got another Bus as we loved the Luci so much. Well we ended up with a beauty of a UK speced 8-seater '96 Previa.

The Previa was a bargain, and we knew she needed work, but we have a number of probs we can't get to the bottom of:

1. Over-heating: On longer journeys (over the hour) the Previa temp gauge suddenly shoots up into the red. If you pull over there is a nasty bubbling sound coming from the radiator expansion tank. I have had the bus into a local garage that did masses of tests, and came up with nothing (and charged £86 for the privalage!).

2. We seem to be dripping oil from the region of the back axel. The actual engine oil isn't leaking, and the Head Gaskett etc have all been checked. But still there is oil left when ever she has been stood for a legnth of time. Also a strong smell of oil is present around the car.

There are few other niggles, but those are my main serious looking issues. Does anyone have any experience of these, or coul point us in hte right direction.

Cheers

AliM

Is it gear oil dripping from the back?
You'll know gear oil by its distinctive smell.

Overheating - leaking pressure cap, blocked rad, water pump on the way out, lack of antifreeze in the coolant and last one head or head gasket failure but I'd guess£86 would have included a sniffer test?

According to the receipt: Pressure Test, Coolong System: No leaks, Block Test: No Faults. Air Con Radiator in bad condition.

Would the Pressure Test cover the rad cap problem?

The air-con rad does need some maintainence, its a fairly big job though....but worth the effort. when you finally get to it......it will need all the debris removing from the matrix.

Oil around the bottom back could be a worn oil seal in the gearbox extension housing ...(where the prop shaft fits into the gear box)

That's the only oil leak I have on mine ... keep meaning to get it sorted ...!!!
