Default auto gearbox trouble

hi guys, im posting on behalf of a friend as he has a lucida with a strange problem

he has the 2.2TD auto and all the forward gears work fine but reverse dont.

he has to put the bus in reverse then build up the revs and eventually reverse will kick in, i was just wondering ( as i do most of the work on his cars but im not to familiar with estima's ) is that a simple thing or would he need to replace his auto box or get it reconditioned ?

Strangley enough these boxes are very common and fitted in all sorts from toyota to saab to volvo ect any auto box firm should be able to cope the company i use charge aprox £900 for a full rebuild and new torque convertor
but a s/hand box will be cheapest
