No not upsetting me Bob, You are the expert, that is confirmed big time. This is my first Toyota (any model) cambelt

I'm just trying to think hard if I did miss something.

It was just pristine under the cover, no signs of anything where maybe if something had seized you would get little burrs of metal.

So if it was seized would undoing the nut about 3/4 of a turn release it.

I know for a fact that with no belt on it the tensioner released fully, you could see a big gap on the arc of the tensioner, but with a belt on, it moved very little.
I did run the engine for about 10 seconds with no covers or water to make sure it started and also so the belt would align itself on the rollers and drives, then I spanner the crank so the belt is under tension, loosen the nut watch the tensioner take what little slack there was and then retighten.

Yes the tension on the spring is quite strong and undoing the nut a small amount allows it to move, when it is right and you use the allen key if you pull the tensioner round it has a very slow return as i said damped with grease inside the assembly
