I Think you'll find they've chewed their way out - along with the big end!

the tapping noise would be the big end con rod cap about to drop off and send the con rod through the block, this is caused by the big end bearing shell's breaking up caused by a dirty engine /dirty oil/ or oil starvation /oil leak the tapping noise end's with a bigBANG !

That's the main reason that I reckon it's a good idea to take off the sump and give it a good clean out, especially on motors with no service history. Just changing the oil won't remove all the residue left in the bottom of the sump.

The engine could of had some work done on it and someone didn't thread lock the big end bolts.

I've had big end bearings spin in their housing before. Because I managed to swap the end caps around

I wouldn't think it would be lack of maintence either. other things would go before that, cam bearings, turbo etc

See how much they want for the cylinder head that might be OK

Perhaps that skinny bolt wit the thread all the way was used for the big end!

Come on Bob - when do we hear your answer?
