while doing so i found a couple that were manual. i don't ever remember seeing a mnual one before.

fuel consumption will always be better in a manual compered to a auto no matter what make of vehicle it may be.

Well, you'd think so, and I do seem to get remarkable MPG with my manual Estima, but - with the low 5th gear ratio on the manual and the efficient drive lock-up on the auto - I suspect that I would get pretty much remarkable MPG with an auto Estima...

However, if the manual had the same gear ratio it would win hands down...

But, as either will run on very little expensive diesel, made up with free used oil, a couple of MPG either way isn't really too important!

I have a manual Previa, 2.4 engine and the petrol consumption isn't too bad 24 to 30 mpg better on a long run, trading up to an automatic soon so will find out if there are any differences then as far as MPG is concerned.
Not sure on performance differences between manual and auto, I do like the extra control you have over the manual gearbox though especially at traffic lights

You can whip through the gears on an Auto also.

I much prefer an autobox on these, especially when towing.i get pretty much the same mpg as martin's manual bus.even had 32 mpg once on a run over to the east coast, but that was not whilst towing.

My first Previa was a manual. The last two have been autos. I've never noticed any significant difference between the fuel consumption on them.

One thing I did notice about the manual is that the gear lever is awkward to reach with the arm down on the driver's seat.

I prefer autos overall; first bought when I injured my leg and consequently noticed how my wife rode the clutch all the time at junctions. She won't drive anything else now - well she drives my VW camper, but doesn't like it much! Autos are much better for towing IMO, and any advantage manual drivers have off the mark is usually lost when they have to change gear...
