I was thinking more of a turbine generator or a turbine attached to the crank. Think of a permenent magnet rotor spinning at 20,000 - 50,000rpm and and how much energy could be made from that.

Hi Clint,
What would that mean. I mean the energy input, u mean it can be amplified? The output will be higher than the input. ??????? |

One turbo manufacturer makes a turbine that can be coupled to the crankshaft so that more energy is recouperated from the exhaust gasses. Im thinking that I use another skyline turbo (ball Bearing) and remove the compressor housing and wheel. I then make a cup style housing that bolts onto the shaft and rotates with the shaft. Inside the cup is some neodmium magnets arranged in the North south patern completely filling the cup in a ring formation. then on the inside is a 3phase stator . Your normal 80amp alternator if it had the full 12V applied to the rotor could produce upto 120Vdc when spun as fast as 4000+rpm. this permanent magnet turbine driven generator could spin as fast as 50,000+rpm(would need to be balanced obviuosly) but depending on the winding configuration could produce quite a few volts and a few amps.. the higher the volts the less amps are needed to make power eg. 12V at 100amps is 1200Watts or 120V at 10amps is 1200Watts So make a ****load of volts. supply that to a series DC motor coupled to the crankshaft and you will be reclaiming some of that lost energy.. It would be intersting to see what a turbine could generate... |

OOps .....
Will be very interesting though. what about the second turbo. Where do u fit it?. Also wouldnt that choke the exhaust line considerably. Two turbos in line......... |

if it can produce enough electric the altenator can be cancelled out and thats one less pulley for the crank to turn.. that alone should see an increase of about 5% in power/economy... but then there is the problem of lack of turbo spin on idle..
sounds like a good idea tho.. i wonder if it'd work |

The exhaust turbine would look after that. |

hello - i'm a newbie here and found this a very interesting thread, but has anyone found any increase in running temperature due to the egr blanking/butterfly removal mod? as i would be very worried about any increase due to the already fragile cylinder heads on these estima's. p.s what a great forum and look forward to my estima ownership which by the look of things is going to keep me very busy!!!

The throttle plate removal should actually make the combustion temp lower due to more air present or a diluted or leaner mixture. One of the cheapest/easiest and most rewarding mods that can be performed on these vans. ClintJ |

then this could actually improve the lifespan of the engine aswell as more torque - double bonus!!!!!
