Hello,

Can anyone tell me what the button arrowed in the attached picture is supposed to do ? If I press it nothing obvious seems to happen.

Attached File  Button.jpg (42.64K)
Number of downloads: 89

The other switches from right to left are fairly obvious, door mirror control, power door control, switch for rear fog lamp (for SVA), then there is the doorbell like button.

Many Thanks

BBB

P.S.

The wife thinks its a button you press to find drivers who should have more important things to worry about.......

The button that should be there is the rear fog light button (Cold Climate Vehicles)

So what happens when it`s pressed.....?

Any extra lights fitted inside/outside...?

Easiest way would be to drop the lower panel & trace the wires (if it`s wired upto anything)

Could it be for an aftermarket rear fog lamp, but the bulb / fuse has blown?

Thanks for all the suggestions so far....

My bus has had a single rear fog light fitted, this works and is turned on by the switch to the right of the "Button of Mystery"

No two ways about it, it is something aftermarket, Toyota switches have never looked like that.

Could it be to do with an immobiliser/alarm?

Perhaps any other lighting that been added inside or out?

But whatever it is for, it wasn't there when the car left the factory.

Regards, Rob.

Yes I am sure you are correct. I do seem to have a selection of different after market switches. I don't know why the rear fog light was wired into a separate switch when the front works off of the original stalk.

I wonder if it is possible to buy original looking switches from Toyota?

If I get an oppotunity I'll investigate the wiring this weekend, although I expect this will be a low priority task way down the task list supplied to me by "she who must be obeyed"

Cheers

You could buy the genuine Toyota switches and wire them in to have that OE look. Pricey though.

I've been head down in the drivers foot well with a torch and there are wires connected to the switch, I have yet to take the panel off to follow were they go.

the switch should pop out with a blunt knife, put a spare bulb over the terminals, check for a live. any strange holes or fixings that could of been something before removal,

Were the later Estima models ever fitted with an ECT button? I remember this from my J plate diesel Lucida but not from my (1999) Previa VVTI petrol engined model.

Don't even think they made into the later Mk1s, seem to have vanished along with the arrival of the 3c-te engine

Further exploration has revealed the "Button of Mystery" simply makes a ground connection when pressed , I traced one of the two wires connected to it to an earthing point. The other wire disappears behind the dashboard, is not visble behind the radio or at the relays behind the glove box , so I still have no real idea what it is for!
