Hi, i've got a 2002 estima 2.4 petrol. A few days ago the engine management light came on but car drove fine. Yesterday, the car refused to start, so called in help who jumpstarted it. However, there was strage clonking and rumbling from the engine but that too went away when the car warmed up a bit. Took it to my garage who read the codes as a Lambda sensor and VVT issue. They now say that they need to open the cyclinder hood to assess what the core issue is.
Any ideas on what the issue could be? can i potentially be look at a very expensive repair bill? I am concerned because the garage said that it "may" need a new cylinder head!! Since the engine seems to run fine after a while, i am hoping its a simpler issue than that!! Appreciate any help I can get on the subject. Thanks.

IMHO liting the head at this stage is gross overkill! Your first port of call would be a replacement Lambda sensor or two. I'm assuming that the car has one in front and behind the cat. For a second opinion take it to an auto electrician who doesn't do mechanical work so they don't have a vested interest in delving into the engine.
Yesterday was a good day to die. Today has been even better. I can't wait to see what tomorrow will be like

Thanks for the reply. I am going to suggest a lambda sensor replacement to begin with. Just wondering, can the sensors alone be causing teh sounds that teh engine is making at cold start?

I'd second the oil idea, the Toyota VVTi system is very sensitive to wrong oil, or even oil that has gone out of grade.
They use the engine oil pressure, via a PWM signal controlled oil injector, to control the amount of valve timing advance, so the wrong oil, insufficient oil or simply old oil can easily put the vale gear out of kilter, somtimes making some alarming noises.
HTH, regards, Rob.
