Yup don't use the rota on there all that will happen is all the roots of the weeds will get chopped up and everything will come back 100 times worse.

The BEST way of clearing the allotment is a big bit of old carpet, dump it on at the start of winter and by spring everything is nice and dead ready to be cleared, sadly that boat has sailed for this season.....

Good luck with it we keep getting offered an allotment must get round to taking one (more allotments that people here) i'd quite like to be getting some fruit going i've got some dwarf plum trees which stay about 3 foot high and are in pots hopefully get some fruit off em this year.

I grew loads of strawbs last year and next door has rasbs growing wild so we get all of them and for no effort too they just look after themselves.

Get yourself a good source of well rotted horse crap and when you're preparing the soil get it mixed in good n proper like. Don't forget you'll want a little shed on your plot to sit and drink your tea from when it's rainy

Try growing sweetcorn that's a good one, nice and easy too, Tomatoes are another good choice and the missus always gets a good crop when growing courgettes and runner beans.

I'm doing potatoes this year in the garden you grow them in the large reusable bags from the supermarket loads cheaper than buy special grow things for them just get a large Tesco/Asda reusable bag chuck ya spuds in (ooer) cover them and as they grow chuck some more soil in and once they get quite full you have a huge stack of spuds in the bag wooohooo

Good luck with the job front fella, i've just got a seasonal job here as a car park attendant gonna love it, being outside minimal stress (compared to IT work) and 1 mile from my front door bonus! It's only taken 11 months to find something mind..... (sorry don't want to be a downer it's rural living not many jobs lol) Will keep my fingers crossed for you

congrats on the job rich. before this job i was 13 months out of work and unfortunatly for me it wasnt a rural thing  the steel industry is affected by the building industry which was badly affected by the credit crunch/economic slowdown. i have many ex-workmates and close friends that havent had a chance of work since it hit us all but i do believe the economy is rising so things should hopefully get better
:cloud9: be carefull what you wish for, you might just get it
